A New Roof for the PAC Building

The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, a 183-acre zoo in Cleveland, Ohio, is home to many different facilities and exhibits—and the safety of their animals relies on keeping their structures in strong, high-quality condition.

The Job

Commercial Roof and Skylight Replacement

Warren Roofing® was hired to replace the roof and skylights on the PAC Building—home to lemurs and gorillas—at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. We spent more than two years helping to design and budget this project and brainstorming with other trades as to how to minimize any disruption to the animals and guests at the zoo.

The Challenge

Ensuring the Safety and Well-Being of the Animals

The lemurs and gorillas who live in the PAC Building depend on UV rays from the sun to survive. This meant that, during the roof replacement, the skylights could not be covered. This project would require going above and beyond to ensure the safety of the animals, a unique and critically important challenge.

The Process

New EPDM Roof System Installation

This project involved replacing the existing roof of the PAC Building with a vapor barrier and new EPDM roofing system. The skylights over the animals were also being replaced.

On top of all the safety measures we uphold during every job, special attention was needed to keep the animals safe. Nothing could fall into an exhibit. We also had to make sure the animals could not escape through the skylights as we removed them. Daily communication with the client was needed so that the animals could be moved to a safe place.

The Results

A Job Well Done—and Safely

The project ran very smoothly, and the owner was extremely satisfied. There was no disruption or negative impact on the animals or zoo guests throughout the project.
