Lakewood Recycling

The View: Lakewood Recycling

Enhancing a Unique Industrial Facility

Lakewood Recycling is a vital industrial facility specializing in recycling and waste management, supporting sustainable practices. However, as an industrial site in Greater Cleveland, its roof faced extreme wear and tear, including exposure to chemical elements and environmental stressors. The aging roof was no longer providing adequate protection, resulting in leaks and compromised insulation. Additionally, the unique structure of the roof—a domed precast concrete deck—created challenges in terms of both roofing installation and maintenance.

Recognizing the need for an experienced and specialized roofing contractor, Lakewood Recycling engaged Warren Roofing® to replace their roof and ensure the facility’s long-term safety and operational efficiency.

The Job

Specialized Roof Replacement for a Domed Structure

Warren Roofing® was chosen for this project by Millstone Management Group, the project’s general contractor, due to our proven expertise in handling complex commercial roofing projects. Our track record of successfully completing difficult roofing installations, particularly in challenging industrial environments, made us the right choice for this job. The domed structure and unique environmental demands of Lakewood Recycling required a roofing solution tailored to meet these specific needs.

The Challenge

Navigating the Complexities of a Domed Roof

The existing roof at Lakewood Recycling was deteriorating, causing frequent leaks and insulation breakdowns. The dome-shaped roof, made of precast concrete, presented unique installation challenges due to its curvature, making traditional roofing solutions difficult. Additionally, the lack of snow retention systems created safety risks, as snow and ice shedding could potentially harm workers or damage equipment below. Safety became a top priority given the steep slopes and environmental demands.

Warren Roofing® addressed the roof’s curvature by using specialized techniques to ensure uniform adhesion, which was crucial for the roofing system’s long-term performance. We also implemented strict safety protocols, including harnessing, controlled work zones, and adherence to OSHA regulations. Furthermore, to avoid weather-related complications, we carefully scheduled the project to avoid wind and temperature fluctuations, ensuring optimal bonding of the PVC roofing system.

The Solution

A Durable, Watertight Roofing System

To address the specific challenges posed by the domed roof, Warren Roofing® proposed a fully adhered Sarnafil PVC roofing system. This solution was chosen for its durability, flexibility, and superior adhesion to the unique curvature of the precast concrete deck. The Sarnafil PVC membrane is not only resistant to water infiltration but also provides an energy-efficient barrier for the facility.

In addition to the roofing membrane, a snow rail system was installed to prevent the risk of snow and ice sliding off the roof, improving safety for employees and minimizing potential hazards. The team also used specialized insulation and adhesives to ensure the system’s integrity, accommodating the domed shape while enhancing the building’s energy efficiency.

Materials Used:

  • Sarnafil PVC Roofing System: A fully adhered system designed for maximum performance on curved structures.
  • Snow Rail System: Custom-designed to safely manage snow and ice shedding, preventing accidents.
  • Specialized Insulation & Adhesives: To accommodate the dome’s shape and improve the building’s energy efficiency.

The Process

Precision and Expertise in Every Step

This project required careful planning and a strategic approach due to the unconventional domed structure. The Warren Roofing® team followed a meticulous step-by-step process to ensure successful installation of the new roofing system. First, the existing roof was carefully removed, preserving the integrity of the domed precast concrete deck. All debris was cleared, and the surface was prepped for the new installation. Special insulation techniques were then applied to conform to the curvature of the roof, ensuring maximum energy efficiency and providing a stable base for the new system. The fully adhered Sarnafil PVC membrane was installed using specialized adhesives to achieve a watertight seal that would withstand the elements.

A snow rail system was installed in high-risk areas to prevent hazardous snow and ice shedding, ensuring safety throughout the winter months. Finally, after installation, thorough inspections were conducted to ensure all elements met Warren Roofing®’s high standards, and the team worked closely with Millstone Management Group to exceed client expectations.

Throughout the process, seamless communication with Millstone Management Group and other on-site contractors ensured a coordinated effort and the successful completion of the project.

The Results

A Robust Roofing System for Long-Term Durability

The project was completed on time and met all of the client’s needs for safety, performance, and aesthetics. The new Sarnafil PVC roofing system offers Lakewood Recycling a durable and energy-efficient solution, providing superior protection against water infiltration and the elements. Additionally, the custom snow rail system greatly enhances safety by preventing the dangerous accumulation of ice and snow. Millstone Management Group and Lakewood Recycling both expressed their satisfaction with Warren Roofing®’s ability to navigate the complexities of this project and deliver a high-quality, long-lasting roofing system.
