The May Cleveland Case Study

The View: The May Cleveland

Making a Rooftop Terrace Dream a Reality

The May Cleveland project folderThe May Cleveland is an apartment building located at 200 Euclid Avenue in the heart of downtown Cleveland. Once a popular shopping center in Public Square, The May Cleveland is now home to luxury apartments that showcase a mix of historical architecture and modern design.

The roof replacement project included design plans for an enclosed glass atrium and an accessible roof deck, but these incredible features would only become a reality with Warren Roofing and their construction partner Geis Companies on the job.

The Job

A One-of-a-Kind Roofing Project

Warren Roofing was hired to do a complete roof tear off and replacement—but this wouldn’t be the run-of-the-mill commercial roofing installation. The team would need to cut a hole in the center of the building to create a 3-story, open-air glass atrium, as well as install a 2,000-square-foot, walk-on roof deck system—complete with synthetic turf—for residents to safely enjoy.

The Challenge

Getting to the Roof

The first challenge had to be solved before the crew could even begin their work. With The May’s location in the bustling center of Public Square, finding a place to set up a crane to access the roof was nearly impossible. Fortunately, Warren Roofing was able to borrow space from the nearby House of Blues in order to reach a crane to The May’s roof. Once the crew could safely access the roof, the real challenge—installing an intricate roof deck system—would begin.

The Crew: 8 roofing technicians

The Status: The 18-month project was completed in June 2020.

The Process

Creating a Roof Deck Like No Other

Warren Roofing began by tearing off the existing roof and installing a temporary roof on the apartment building. The permanent roof would need to incorporate the creation of a multi-story, open-air atrium and light well feature for residents to enjoy.

Unlike the old roof, which was never intended to be accessible by residents, a section of the new roof deck would be a fully landscaped terrace for residents to utilize. To achieve the walk-on roof deck, intricate layers of concrete and wood roofing were carefully installed before laying synthetic turf and completing the landscaping.

The Results

Redefining Modern Architecture

Warren Roofing successfully completed the job within the designated time frame. The new high-performance, durable Carlisle roof includes a 20-year warranty and will serve The May Cleveland well for many years to come. The finished roof terrace, with its many features and amenities, is a beautiful piece of modern architecture in downtown Cleveland.
